i think the alchemist and this movie, o brother, where are thou, are very similar in different ways. in the alchemist, santiago is looking for his treasure and goes through many obstacles just like everett, pete, and delmar were looking for a treasure. and all of them ended up finding something totally different. differences in themes reflect the kind of person each character is. for example, santiago is a boy who's just trying to follow his dream. he doesn't know much to begin with so he looks for help anywhere he can. but the three guys, however, are criminals and have experience in tricking people to get what they want. i think the boy learns much more throughout his journey than what everett, pete, and delmar learned throughout their journey. in the end, there was no treasure for them but santiago found his treasure.
